I've started a new part in the 'Information' section on web design. I've been learning all sorts of interesting stuff in the process of creating this website. One of the wonders of the internet is the way it allows you to share your ideas, the things you've found out and your enthusiasms. To that end...

The first web design tutorial I'm doing is about how I've set up the new newsletter system. The first part is here.

I found this model while I was tidying up files on my hard disk. I originally designed the Cat-o-log to be printed in an old Flying Pig catalogue.

The model is a pdf file ready to print out.

If you skip along to the Canon Creative Park website you can download a couple of new models by yours truly.

The Tiger and Grasshopper models are both snap-ups. They have an elastic band inside them. Fold them flat and when they are released they jump up. Fun!

Tiger

Grasshopper

You may remember that I had mentioned these models on Workshop Notes before. Canon asked me to remove the entires until the models were released. They are now available so I'm off into the archives to republish.

A new version of the software that I use to control subscriptions came out yesterday. The shiny new version 5!

I downloaded it and tried to install it but when it refused to import the current subscribers list I backed up and left the old version in play. Meanwhile I got a blank email from myself to myself. I thought nothing of it, just put it down to spam. That is, until I began to get emails from other peole saying that they too had received blank emails from me.

I didn't get chance to look into it further as I was busy with the sundial and newsletter.

This morning I had a closer look at the update process. It turned out that I was updating from version 4.12 to version 5 and I should have been using version 4.14 to update from. A quick visit to the website and I had my version 4.12 updated to 4.14. I then tried again to set up version 5.

That was when all hell broke loose, I got email after email asking what had happened to people's subscriptions. They couldn't download the new sundial model, they couldn't get a discount. What's going on! Considering what had happened everyone has been really nice and understanding. Can I just take a moment to thank all you subscribers out there for your patience? (I'll be thanking you again in a minute! I really do appreciate your help and feedback getting this sorted!)

I finally tracked the problem down and once I'd run the updater program all seemed to be well. The only problem being that I've had to manually reset everybodies subscription status. One at a time. By hand. If I've missed you out let me know and I'll get it sorted.

So, as promised, I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone for their patience and understanding! It wouldn't have been like this if the internet was run on Logic Goats!

Thank you!

Rob x

I'm still polishing the Subscriber's system. One problem that has come up is, how do subscribers get hold of downloads that were released before they subscribed? Surely they shouldn't have to pay full price?!

So now, if you visit the store as a subscriber you will be given a code which gives you a 50% discount! All subscribers get 50% off the price of existing downloads. I'll streamline the system soon, just working on the technology. Meanwhile subscribe to claim your models half price.

I've nearly completed the the page layouts for the sundial model. Should be up and ready tomorrow. I've also been working on a way for subscribers to access the full back catalogue of models for a special price! And finally, I completed a successful test of the new newsletter system! Another busy day!
