Hoo, boy! I'm 74 going on 75 and have been building and designing paper automata for years and years. You are never too old until you can't cut straight with scissors and only smear yourself with glue instead of the paper.
That's a good idea. I don't have plans for a paper version. I barely have plans for the wooden version, actually. I made one for a prototype and gave it away. I'll make one for myself some day.
If anyone's interested there's a new paper model that just went up on hallmark.com on Sunday. It's a beer mug, it's free and not terribly difficult to put together. Here's the link:
On a cam follower i always have to use a little weight but i tried the Flex in the flex joint as a spring next to the cam follower an it works great . it pushs the follower tight on the cam !!!! i really like this i hope it helps
Hi Rob you were talking about you wish you could use springs what about the flex part in Flex Joint it works an acts like a spring. I was just wondering if that would help.
While Ada Lovelace is no doubt a very respectable figure, a dolphin, half deep in water, would make more sense with this new venture mechanism.
You try to move it and it, perhaps when smiling, begins to bob up and down as if playing with you. And if there are two dolphins or taking turn to come out...
Last year on your site you had a video of a "Pull Santa's beard" wooden toy. I wonder whether this would lend itself to being reproduced in card form. Would probably need to use thick card like that use for picture mounts. Do you have plans/instructions
Hi Daveyboy - sorry for the late reply but I just noticed this request. My name is Mike Adair and I created the Santa and Elf paper toys you're looking for. They went up on Hallmark.com for a couple of weeks and then went away. I've never used Dropbox before but I've dropped the files there. The Santa and Elf toys are combined in one pdf:
Wow, rocket, this time you exceed all the expectations! Is it alive? Congratulations for this marvelous model. Any expected date to share the plans how to build it, too?
Your age should never matter when you are doing what you enjoy. I found the Flying Pig site by accident in the year 2000, was immediately hooked, and have been making models of all sorts since then. I will be (a young) 70 this month.

I'm looking for a mechanism for rocking the legs in my frog and crab clocks. https://vimeo.com/54744392 I'm sure that a Scotch Yoke setup would work, similar to what you used in Nessie, but I'm wondering if there's an alternative solution.
Thanks!

Hi John, Looks like a fun project! I think I would probably use a rotating disk and a couple of pushrods rather than the scotch yoke. The bearings are easier. - RI
Two admirable guys: our talented Rob Ives and the nice person, a paper lover and customized man,Michael. Nice match! Congratulations both for creativing and hours of fun. In fact the models were adorable. A wish a Happy New Year for all the members.
im almost 30 and i enjoy making paper automata too and actually alot of the people who are on the site are adults so i wouldnt call these childish.im sure the people who are calling them childish have never even made a paper automata so they have nothing to base it on.but now a ranting paper modeler automata would be very fun =)
At the beginning of the new year, I want to show once again many formed models in the year 2012. These beautiful models I have with "Membership Plus" received free in the last year. The great diversity certainly has all the builders great joy. (Some models were downsized)

This could take "ages", but don't get me started.

Congratulations, Waterrocketsrule! Your model has a nice place in a dentist office. Simple and efficient.
