Print out the pages onto thin card. Score along the dotted and dashed lines, cut out the holes then carefully cut out the pieces.
Roll up the legs tubes and glue them down as accurately as possible.
Fold over and glue down the cams to make double thickness card. Once the glue is dry, carefully cut them out.
Thread the cams onto the axle so that two are up, and two are down as shown in the picture.
Make up the swash plates from double thickness card. Cut out the centre hole and glue in the stubs.
Fold up and glue the box ends as shown.
Fold up and glue the box top.
Fold up and glue the base, again making triangular tubes for strength.
Fold up and glue the four stops.
Make up the other parts of the stops from double thickness card.
Glue the stops into place on the lower top.
Glue the other stop parts into place.
Glue together the top and the two sides noting the position of the holes.
Glue the base into position then glue down the flaps on the front and back to complete the box.
Thread the leg limiter onto the grey area on the leg and glue it into place.
Glue the leg limiter flaps to the square section as shown. In conjunction with the stops these will control how much the birds can turn.
Thread the legs through the holes in the lower top so that the limiters are between the stops.
Thread the other end of the legs up through the holes in the box top. Make sure that the limiters are still between the stops.
Glue the lower top into place.
Fit the swash plates to the end of the leg pieces as shown.
Fit the camshaft into place and secure it with the axle tubes.
Make the handle in three steps.
Fit the handle to the camshaft.
Glue together the beak and front part of the head.
Glue the body inner into place
Glue the tail feather together to complete the bird.
Without glue, fit the birds onto the legs. Turn then so that when you operate the mechanism they meet together.
Turn the handle and watch your love birds flirt!
I originally made this model for my good friends Shaun and Britney from Atlanta. Britney very kindly gave me permission to release it as a project for everyone to enjoy. Thanks Britney and Happy Anniversary to you both!
