Hopping Reindeer

£2.50

Your rating: None (5 votes)

A mash up model for the festive season. I've taken the Reindeer and Tree from here and the Three Cam and Gear Box from here and made this paper automata. In a call back to one of my first ever designs I've called it the Hopping Reindeer.

All the parts that you need are in the downloadable file. Members can download for free, thanks for your support! Non members can download the parts at the link for £2.50

Print out the parts onto thin card (230gsm /67lb)

Score along the dotted and dashed lines then cut out the parts. The instructions are basically the same as the original models with a few small changes. Check out the reindeer and tree instructions here. The instructions for the base are here but check out the instructions below for some minor changes to the original.

Here's the completed cam shaft, note that the third cam now has three lobes.

Here's the cam shaft and gear fitted into place.

The slightly redesigned cam followers now have a triangular end to more closely follow the cams.

With the box upside down the cam fits in here.

The push rod is slightly long and fits to the cam follower like this.

All three cam followers fitted into place.

Make up three reindeer.

Glue them to the ends of the pushrods.

Turn the handle and delight at the Hopping Reindeer! Festive Felicitations one and all!

Gear and Girl Mash-Up

Your rating: None (2 votes)

Here's another project I designed for the Brother International website. It is free for everyone to download and make.

Make the mechanism and find out first-hand how gears work. Why not mash up the Gear Mechanism with the Paper Girl project, another free download from the Brother site.

Check out the YouTube clip showing the mash up in action!

Paper Models Fun!

Your rating: None (12 votes)

Friend of the website Jay and I have been chatting on Google+

He's been working with his students making paper models from the website, encouraging them to mash up existing models and create new designs. It sounds like they have had a fantastic time. I was particually delighted with the models produced by student Uriya including a mash-up of the cam box and the guard dog as well as some models from the Brother website which he had made at home. Thanks Jay and Uriya! They look great!

Phono horn Made from Soda Cans!

Your rating: None (4 votes)

The original Phono Horn project is also downloadable on the Instructables website here

Subscribers to the Instructables website have shared their comments and photos of their versions of the project on the site. The latest comment is from Andrew Spencer who says
"I didn't have any cardstock, so I made it out of soda cans! It really works!"
The final result looks great! Thanks for sharing Andrew!

Mash-Up from Michael42er

Your rating: None (5 votes)

I somehow managed to miss this delightful mash-up/experimental model from friend of the website, Michael42er. He's produced a set of different versions of the intermittent gear model showing how it works with different numbers of teeth. He's then mashed up the inter model wih the Flip Face model to delightful, if slightly creepy, effect. Nice work Michael! Thanks for sharing.

Dinosaur Mash Up by Michael42er

Your rating: None (4 votes)

Michael42er has produced another of his splendid mash-ups. This model takes one of the Essential Mechanisms gearboxes and adds the recent dinosaur model to made this fun automata.

I've pulled out this still from the video to highlight his beautiful ornate gear design. Thanks Michael, entertaining and inspirational as ever!

Intermittent Rotation Mechanism in Action!

Your rating: None (7 votes)

You really need to see these! First posted in the the comments section below the Intermittent Rotation Mechanism are some fantastic pictures and videos using the mechanism just as it was intended.

First out of the gate was Mr Cool who has mixed the Intermittent Rotation Mechanism with the chap from the flip face mechanism then added a dash of David Landis' wonderful work. The end result is in this YouTube video

Michael42er also made use of the mechanism using it to drive four of my previous projects to great effect. You can see his You Tube video here.

Well done to both of you, you have both done a fantastic job! Thanks for sharing.
